Member Spotlight: Lisa Colon

UFCW 1459 - Fri, 2018-11-02 10:44

Lisa Colon, long time UFCW Local 1459 member, leader, and now Union Represenative is this month's Member Spotlight for the UFCW International Union. Thank you Lisa for your committment and leadership!

When Lisa Colon’s daughter had to have three emergency surgeries in a week, she did what any good parent would do—prioritize the health of her child and do her best to take care of her while she recovered.

As a single mom balancing family and a career as a CNA at Chapin Center Nursing Home, Lisa had to put in for FMLA leave to take time off from work, but was horrified to find her request for the urgently needed time off denied by her employer.

Wanting to shift their workplace culture to one that prioritized the needs of the staff and respected the hard work nursing home employees put in to provide quality care for the residents, Lisa and her coworkers decided to take matters into their own hands and join the UFCW to make sure no one felt left out to dry in times of need.

2018 Stewards' Seminar Empowers and Educates

UFCW 1459 - Mon, 2018-10-29 14:25

This year over 150 stewards, union leaders, guests, and staff gathered at Tekoa Country Club to learn more from each other about how to better represent their fellow workers.  President Tyrone Housey and Secretary-Treasurer Dean Ethier began the day by addressing stewards as new leaders for UFCW Local 1459. Attorney David Rome provided an overview of the Janus decision and its impact the labor movement. A thorough and engaging presentation about grievance process was provided by retired IBEW staffer and labor educator Ed Collins. And the day ended with breakouts by sector so stewards from different bargaining units and locations could talk and learn from each other. Thank you to everyone who made this fantastic event possible.
