UFCW Requesting USDA to Reopen Comments on Pork Line Speed Rule

Today, Marc Perrone, president of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW), is requesting the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in a letter to reopen the comment period and delay the implementation of the pork line speed rule, which would allow for unlimited increase in hog slaughter line speeds. The USDA withheld important injury data relating to the proposed rule until after the comment period had closed.

Peach Tree Acres is the only facility of its type in the state of Delaware and provides apartment-style assisted living and day care rehabilitative services for adults with brain injuries.

UFCW Local 1459 Has a New President and a New Secretary-Treasurer

On May 30, 2018 after a forty year career in the labor movement President Dan P. Clifford officially retired, appointing Secretary-Treasurer Tyrone Housey as the new President of Local 1459. 

Tyrone has been a member of Local 1459 over 30 years when he began working at Stop & Shop Supermarket Company in 1988.  Tyrone’s career in the labor movement began in 1994 when he was appointed to shop steward and in 1996 was awarded Steward of the Year.  In 2005 he left the company and accepted a position as Organizer for Local 1459 and later on promoted to Union Representative and then Secretary-Treasurer in 2015.  Tyrone currently lives in Ludlow with his wife Dana and their 3 young children.

Dean Ethier started his career in the labor movement 25 years ago working  at the Milton Bradley Company and years later, hired as an Organizer for UFCW Local 1445 in Boston, Massachusetts.  In 2015 Dean sold his home and moved back to Western MA, landing a position as Union Representative with Local 1459.  Dean has 2 grown daughters and in lives Wilbraham with his wife Betsy.

With the new leadership of President Tyrone Housey and Secretary-Treasurer Dean Ethier, the duo forge to build a vision of success for the the labor movement and the livelihood of the members they now represent and protect.

Massachusetts AFL-CIO President Steven Tolman sent a recent letter to BCBS of Massachusetts President and CEO Andrew Dreyfus. In the letter he called Reed’s actions “unethical, immoral and cruel” and said they represent a conflict of interest that makes it impossible for BCBS to carry out its mission of ensuring members have access to quality and affordable healthcare. The letter also calls on BCBS “to do the right thing: uphold the organization’s role as a healthcare leader in Massachusetts and remove Ms. Reed from the board.”

Sec-Treas. Dean Ethier wins Union Community Service Award at Pioneer Valley Labor Breakfast

On September 7th at the Pioneer Valley Central Labor Council Labor Day Breakfast, Secretary-Treasurer Dean Ethier, was awarded the Philip R. Duck Union Community Service Award in honor of his founding the Annual UFCW Local 1459 Toy Drive. Now in its third year, the Annual Toy Drive provides toys and monetary donations to union families facing difficult times and to help local area charities. The local is taking donations now until December 12th, and these can be dropped off at our office on 33 Eastland Street, Springfield, MA. Thank you Dean!
